CEA FCC Filing Says Cable Industry Must Keep Promise Of Digital Cable Ready And CableCARD
Digital cable ready (DCR) television sets are a marketplace reality that requires the full backing of both the consumer electronics (CE) and cable industries, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) wrote in an ex parte filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). CEA filed its comments yesterday in response to submissions from the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and its members, urging the FCC to lift its requirement that cable operators and competitive products rely on a common interface for purposes of conditional access. The interface and conditional access measures provide protections to prevent theft of service and damage to the cable system.

CEA Announces Another All-Time High For DTV As Cumulative Sales Top 13 Million Units
Retailers are preparing for the biggest digital television (DTV) holiday sales season yet, according to the latest figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Factory-to-dealer DTV product sales totaled 741,598 units in September, which represents a 40 percent increase compared to the same period in 2003. Cumulative 2004 numbers are up 71 percent versus the first 9 months of last year.

CEA Announces Latest HDTV Sales Numbers
Sales of digital television (DTV) products continued to sizzle in August with unit sales rising ten percent over last August, according to figures released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). CEA issued the sales figures today simultaneously at the Association for Maximum Service Television's (MSTV) 18th Annual Television Conference in Washington, D.C. and at CEA's first 2004 fall HDTV Update in Chicago, IL.

Majority of Households That Do Not Subscribe to Pay Television Services do so for Reasons Other Than Economic Limitations
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) submitted comments yesterday in response to the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Public Notice requesting information on television viewers who rely exclusively on over-the-air (OTA) broadcasting, such as why they do not subscribe to a pay television service such as cable or satellite. The FCC also sought comment on options for minimizing the impact on OTA viewers when analog broadcasts cease.

CEA Backs Satelite Digital White Area Bill
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) commended Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and John McCain (R-AZ) on the introduction of the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Rural Consumer Access to Digital Television Act of 2004. This bill will allow digital broadcast satellite (DBS) providers to offer a network high definition television (HDTV) feed to consumers who are unable to receive their local broadcasters' digital signal.

January - February DTV Sales Portend Blow-Out Year, According to Latest CEA Figures
Combined January and February manufacturer-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) products totaled 853,443 units representing dollar sales of more than $1.3 billion, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced today. Compared to the same period in 2003, the 2004 sales represent a 124 percent unit increase and a 100 percent increase in dollar sales. CEA defines DTV products as integrated sets and monitors displaying active vertical scanning lines of at least 480p and, in the case of integrated sets, receiving and decoding ATSC terrestrial digital transmissions.

CEA Enhances Standard Test Method For Television Antennas
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced today that its R5 Antenna Systems Committee has adopted a new edition of the CEA-774 standard for television antennas. Titled CEA-774A - TV Receiving Antenna Performance Presentation and Measurement, the updated standard provides manufacturers of television antennas with the test and measurement procedures necessary to make their products compliant with the antenna categories defined at www.antennaweb.org. Antennaweb.org is a CEA website used by consumers and professional installers to determine which types of television antennas are most appropriate for specific street addresses.

CEA Reports More Than 1.2 Million Over-The-Air DTV Tuners Sold To Date
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) today announced that more than 1.2 million over-the-air digital television (DTV) tuners have been sold factory-to-dealer since product came to market at the close of 1998. DTV tuners are devices capable of receiving DTV broadcast signals (ATSC) and may be purchased as stand-alone set-top boxes or embedded within a DTV set.
