CEA Foundation Extends Grant to Selfhelp; Foundation’s First Grantee Continues to Change Lives
The CEA Foundation announced that it will continue to support its first grantee, Selfhelp Community Services, as Selfhelp seeks to extend and enhance the Virtual Senior Center (VSC) within the communities they are working. Selfhelp intends to implement the lessons learned in its first phase and incorporate those lessons moving forward with its participants, facilitators, project sites, other community partners and independent evaluator. We Have Lost A Legend: Long Time CE Industry Leader, CES Founder and Decorated U.S. Veteran Jack Wayman Dies at Age 92
International CES® founder and consumer electronics (CE) industry legend Jack Wayman died Saturday, August 30 of natural causes at the age of 92, announced Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “The consumer electronics industry has lost a legend and, more personally, I have lost a great friend and mentor,” said Shapiro.

Energy Efficient Set-Top Boxes Saving Consumers Hundreds of Millions of Dollars
A new report released today shows that the voluntary set-top box energy conservation agreement between the pay-TV industry, consumer electronics manufacturers and energy efficiency advocates has saved American consumers approximately $168 million in energy bills. According to the Voluntary Agreement for Ongoing Improvement to the Energy Efficiency of Set-Top Boxes 2013 Annual Report
, the improved energy efficiency of set-top boxes also represents a savings of nearly 842,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. This is equivalent to the output of one-half of a large (500MW) power plant.

CEA Applauds Illinois Governor’s Support for Uber and Lyft

Pat Quinn’s veto of House Bill 4075, also known as “The Uber Bill,” and House Bill 5331: “We applaud Governor Quinn’s decision to support innovation and competition, and give the people of Illinois the transportation choices they deserve. By recognizing the value of innovators such as Uber and Lyft, the governor is protecting existing jobs and creating new employment opportunities for the state. House Bills 4075 and 5331 were misguided attempts to protect entrenched taxi monopolies, which would have driven up transportation costs and hurt Illinois’ economy."

CEA Foundation Awards Grant to Gallaudet University for Video Series on Effective Technologies for Consumers with Hearing Loss
The CEA Foundation, a charitable organization affiliated with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, announced its support for the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University, in a grant to teach consumers with hearing loss about the effective use of their hearing devices with telecommunications technologies. With this CEA Foundation grant, Gallaudet plans to produce eight instructional videos during the course of the upcoming year-long project. Majority of Online Consumers Now Own Tablets, Shows Latest CEA Research
More than half (54 percent) of online U.S. consumers indicate they own tablets, a four percentage point increase since January, according to research released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. Consumer Outlook on Tablets (August 2014 Edition), a semi-annual report examining trend information on consumer behavior and sentiment regarding tablets, also shows tablet owners' purchase intent for all consumer electronics devices increased to 62 percent since January – a nine percentage point jump.
