Latest CEA ‘Consumer Outlook on Tablets Report’ Indicates Increase in Planned Tablet Purchases
Arlington, VA – 04/30/2012 – The number of consumers looking to purchase tablet computers during the next six months has increased in the second quarter of 2012, according to new research released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. CEA’s Consumer Outlook on Tablets: Q2 2012 report examined trend information on consumer behavior and sentiment regarding tablet computers from January through March 2012.

Currently, consistent with data from the Consumer Outlook on Tablets: Q1 2012 report, one in five (20 percent) U.S. adults online owns a tablet computer, and  more than two-thirds of online consumers say they will buy a tablet sometime in the future. However, an increasing number of consumers plan to purchase a tablet in the next six months. As of March, 15 percent of consumers say they’ll buy a tablet in the next six months, an increase of five percentage points since January.

“The launch of new tablets has consumers assessing their computing needs to ensure they have the latest and greatest across the spectrum of devices,” said Rhonda Daniels, CEA’s manager of market research. “We’ll find out in future Consumer Outlook on Tablets reports if consumers followed through on their plans to purchase tablets in the next six months.”

Online conversations about tablets remains overwhelmingly positive, consistent with previous reports. This quarter, entertainment activities remained the focus of much of the online tablet conversation. However reading books jumped to second place, replacing listening to music, which dropped to third. Watching movies on tablet computers was also the most common activity for overall tablet users, except those using an Android operating system, where reading books was the most common activity.

CEA will host a free webinar for CEA members to discuss the Consumer Outlook series in more depth and highlight an opportunity for members to gain access to brand- and model-level social media conversation data through a proprietary data portal. The webinar will be on Thursday, May 31 from 2-3 p.m. EDT. To register, email the Webinar team or call 703-907-4354.

The Consumer Outlook on Tablets reports will be released on the last Monday of the month following the close of each quarter. The series of reports was designed and formulated by CEA Market Research, the most comprehensive source of sales data, forecasts, consumer research and historical trends for the consumer electronics industry.
