New Consoles

Looking ahead, 2006 is likely to be the gaming industry’s biggest ever, largely because of the introduction of Sony’s PlayStation3 and Nintendo’s Wii. The two consoles are expected to be available for the 2006 holiday season and likely will trigger a sharp increase in both hardware and software sales.

Microsoft claims that its Xbox 360, which was introduced in late 2005, will have a ten million unit head start when Sony and Nintendo launch. Regardless, the competition will be unprecedented and generate enormous media attention, both free and in paid advertising. The extra exposure should attract even more people to gaming.
