Home Networking

Wi-Fi was the undisputed home networking story of 2004 and continues to explode as consumers seek to bring home the experience they can get at coffee houses, university campuses and airports. As Internet usage continues to surge, more consumers are logging on outside their traditional office and home settings, wanting the ability to be connected whenever, wherever. More and more, they are using wireless networks to do so.

This means sales of network cabling and hardware accessories also are expanding, from basic Wi-Fi routers, cards and adapters for each computer or device connected to the router, to base station antennas and range extenders that seek to boost reception in "dead" areas of the home where neither cell phones or wireless networks function without interruption.

Not surprisingly, networked home owners demonstrate a much greater interest in value-added services such as bundled services, voice over IP and networked storage over their non-networked counterparts, according to Parks Associates' Home Networks and Residential Gateways study.
