CEA Joins 25 Organizations In Calling for Congressional Support of The Digital Media Consumers Rights Act
Companies, Trade Associations and Consumer Groups Cosign Letter To Congress
| Arlington, Virginia | 3/24/2003 |
The following statement was issued by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) President and CEO Gary Shapiro regarding a letter (attached) sent today to all members of Congress by twenty-five companies and organizations urging support for the Digital Media Consumers Rights Act of 2003 (H.R. 107):
"CEA is proud to sign on to this letter in support of the bipartisan Digital Media Consumers Rights Act of 2003 (H.R. 107). H.R. 107 would reestablish the balance that had characterized American copyright law for the two centuries prior to enactment of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in 1998 (DMCA). Reform of the DMCA is a critical priority for our members. Currently, the DMCA is being used to stifle innovation and injure consumers.
"H.R. 107 is in the mainstream tradition of American intellectual property law, offering meaningful protection to both owners and users of copyrighted works. The extraordinary range and diversity of organizations that have signed on to this letter is testimony to the critical importance of this bill. We commend Reps. Rick Boucher (D-VA) and John Doolittle (R-CA) along with the other sponsors of this legislation, and we will continue to fight for HR 107's swift passage."
