CEA SEEKS PARTICIPATION IN FINAL REVIEW OF DTV INTERFACES STANDARD
R7WG9 Finalizing Home Networking Standard for DTV

Arlington, Virginia 3/29/2006

The Consumer Electronics Association's (CEA®) Technology and Standards' Home Network Committee is seeking participation for final review of the CEA-2014 standard. The standard, CEA-2014 Web-based Protocol and Framework for Remote User Interface on UPnP(tm) Networks and the Internet (Web4CE), defines how digital televisions (DTV) can control other devices on local home networks and over the Internet by displaying their user interfaces on digital television sets.

The standard will be based on the UPnP (tm) Device Architecture v 1.0 and, once implemented, will allow people to control their digital video recorders (DVRs) from virtually anywhere. In addition, CEA-2014 will enable application developers to create user interface applications for use on a DTV that are assured to deliver the user experience intended by the designer, irrespective of the DTV manufacturer.

"With this new standard, we are enabling a truly consumer-friendly home network," said Virginia Williams, CEA director of engineering and standards. "When every device uses Internet protocols to communicate, then all the devices can connect automatically and provide ease-of-use to the consumer."

The active membership of R7WG9 Enhanced UPnP Remote User Interface is composed of a cross-section of companies from the consumer electronics (CE) and PC industries. Any CE company interested in participating should contact Leslie King at lking@ce.org or (703) 907-4327. CEA membership is not required to participate.
