CEA COMMENDS THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY'S RULING TO IMPROVE STANDARDS FOR CATHODE RAY TUBE RECYCLING
Discarded CRTs Are a Lost Opportunity for Resource Conservation
| Arlington, Virginia | 7/20/2006 |
The following statement was issued today by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®) Senior Director and Environmental Counsel, Parker Brugge commending the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) improved standards for cathode ray tube (CRT) recycling. CRTs, the technology historically used in televisions and computer display screens, are the products of largest concern to electronics recycling stakeholders domestically and abroad:
"CEA agrees with the EPA's statement that a CRT not recycled is an opportunity lost. The safe recycling of CRTs and other electronics saves energy, conserves resources and recovers valuable raw materials. CRTs are far too valuable to be discarded.
"Yesterday's ruling is an important step towards increased electronics recycling and resource recovery on a national scale. To promote legitimate recycling of CRTs, we encourage the states to implement rules consistent with the EPA's regulation.
"CEA supports a harmonized national solution for electronics recycling that establishes consistency for industry, government and above all, consumers. We recognize this rulemaking as another important step in the right direction. "
