CEA APPLAUDS MEMBER COMPANIES RECOGNIZED AS ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS
Four of NEWSWEEK's Top Five Greenest Corporations Are Technology Companies

Arlington, Virginia 9/23/2009

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today applauded its member companies recognized by NEWSWEEK as among the nation's greenest corporations. HP, Dell, Intel and IBM (ranked 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively) took 4 of the top 5 spots on the list, which ranked America's 500 largest corporations according to environmental impact, green policies and reputation. Twelve of the top twenty-five companies are technology companies.

“We are extremely pleased to congratulate all of the consumer electronics companies that were recognized by NEWSWEEK for their support for environmental sustainability,” said Gary Shapiro, CEA's president and CEO. “This recognition shines a well-deserved light on the accomplishments of so many in our industry that have implemented environmental strategies that contribute to the good of the industry, as well as the health of people and the planet.”

NEWSWEEK collaborated with three research partners to compile the rankings: KLD Research & Analytics, which tracks environmental, social and governance data on companies worldwide and served as lead partner; Trucost, which specializes in quantitative environmental performance measurement; and CorporateRegister.com, the world's largest online directory of social responsibility, sustainability and environmental reporting.

According to NEWSWEEK, “the goal was to assess each company's actual resource use and emissions and its policies and strategies, along with its reputation among its peers.” A complete list of the rankings, released September 21, is available at http://greenrankings.newsweek.com/

In October, 2008, CEA published its first industry-wide environmental sustainability report. Environmental Sustainability and Innovation in the Consumer Electronics Industry benchmarks the industry's progress toward eco-stewardship, from design and energy efficiency to green manufacturing and clean delivery systems. The report highlights the successful efforts of more than 60 technology companies, including Cisco, Dell, HP, Intel, Lenovo, and Nokia, to advance environmental accountability. The complete report is available at www.CE.org/green.
