Google to Purchase Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion
Google announced a $12.5 billion cash deal this week to acquire Motorola Mobility, the search giant's largest acquisition to date. The deal, which gives Google entree to the hardware business for the first time, also provides Google with a number of smartphone-related patents.

IBM Developing "Cognitive Computer Chips"
IBM has developed two working prototypes of 'cognitive computer chips,' designed to mimic the human brain. The project was supported by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which will provide an additional $21 million to the program.

Garmin Launches GPS Devices for Cyclists
GPS maker Garmin has launched two new tracking devices geared toward cyclists. The Edge 200 Cycling GPS and the Garmin Vector feature weatherproof housing and track data such as speed, distance and calories burned.

Nokia to Develop 300 Media Apps for WP7
Nokia has struck a deal with Canada-based Polar Mobile to produce more than 300 media applications for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone OS. The applications will format content from third-party publishers for viewing on Nokia devices.

Hughes Partners with AAA to Provide In-Vehicle Services
Hughes Telematics will provide its In-Drive connected services to more than 12 million drivers under a new deal with AAA Club Partners (ACP). The deal will enhance core AAA capabilities such as AAA roadside services, real-time diagnostics and teen driver safety.

Smartphone maker HTC plans to invest $300 million in Beats Electronics, makers of the popular Beats By Dr. Dre headphones. Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine explains that discussions about collaborations -- including HTC devices with built-in Beats technology -- began at the International CES in January.

Video streaming service Hulu announced it plans to launch in Japan by the end of the year. Users can sign up to be notified when the service goes live, and will be able to access content on a number of devices including computers, tablets and gaming devices.

Sprint will begin offering business-oriented network services in the fourth quarter, according to the company. In addition to on-demand infrastructure, Sprint plans to offer software, apps and Internet hosting to businesses of all sizes.
