Innovations in Assistive Technologies

April 11, 2014
Innovation took center stage at the 2014 International CES® with amazing new products in the areas of wireless, apps, automotive, digital health and fitness, 3D printing, and startup tech. Some of these devices could have profound implications for mHealth, telemedicine, assistive technologies, and healthcare marketing. But not all new technologies at CES come with fanfare. Often, it’s the gradual advance in technology innovation that can have a huge impact and improve consumers’ lives. One such area is sound quality, thanks to the gains being made in the production and use of high resolution...

Essential Patents

January 21, 2014
Modern technology is built on a foundation of industry standards. Standards developing organizations (SDOs) like CEA are vital to bringing new products to market. But sometimes overly-aggressive patent litigation can get in the way of standards setting, stymieing new products. SDOs bring technical experts and the companies they work for together to collaborate on a common set of standards. Once a standard becomes part of a product’s design, it can work with other devices, regardless of manufacturer. Technology standards also enable interoperability between new products and devices already in the...

What's Coming in 2014?

December 20, 2013
What do we expect will be the hot standards activities in 2014? It’s impossible to predict but clear that portable and connected devices drive many possibilities. CEA is developing Guidelines for Reducing Visual-Manual Driver Distraction During Interactions with Portable or Handheld Electronic Devices, a title only an engineer can love on a subject we all care about—keeping drivers safe and focused while allowing appropriate use of electronics. Another recently launched project provides a profile for CE devices using IPv6 addressing to hasten the transition to a world of limitless IP addresses.   It may come as a surprise that even though streaming music and other...

Getting Ready for Ultra HD

October 08, 2013
Ultra high-definition (Ultra HD) is a remarkable new technology that is leading to a shift in the tech landscape with important implications for the entire consumer video ecosystem. The CE industry is getting ready for the change. At the 2013 International CES there were more than 40 Ultra HD displays shown. These displays can show 8.3 million pixels of native Ultra HD content and also “upscale” or up-convert from Full HD to Ultra HD. Everyone that puts Full HD in front of consumers is involved in the move to Ultra HD. This includes organizations as diverse as Netflix, the HDMI Forum, broadcast and cable groups and chipmakers. CEA’s new report, “Ultra High...

What’s New at the Forum?

July 23, 2013
CEA held its Technology & Standards (T&S) Spring Forum in Denver in May. The forum is an opportunity for some of the brightest technology innovators in the CE industry to come together and share their insights on where the industry is heading. With more than 70 committees, subcommittees and working groups and roughly 1,100 participants, the T&S program is a reputable and flexible standards making body accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The forum helps connect colleagues to discuss topics of interest to their organization and particular field. Forum meetings often lead to new projects that advance technology success.   The 2013 forum led to...

Reality TV

May 21, 2013
One thing is certain: consumers are destined to have gorgeous displays with resolution that matches the acuity of their vision. Even though I have seen many 4K and 8K demos, I am still astounded by the way Ultra High-Definition TV (Ultra HDTV) can mimic reality. Looking at a demo from Japanese broadcaster NHK at the NAB show, I had a moment when I experienced what experts mean when they say Ultra HD can “feel” like 3D because the resolution is so good. I thought I was looking at one of the classic scenes used to show off studio quality cameras, a model sitting at “home” with plenty of colorful objects. I had actually glanced up at an 8K display that was showing the...

Empowering Consumers with Technology

May 13, 2013
From this day forward you will have—within reach or through the sound of your voice—an agent to answer your questions, bring you entertainment, coach and connect you with those you care about. When Bill Gates used to paint a picture of a “rich user experience” during his keynotes at the International CES®, the premise was that the user was sitting in front of a PC. With the phenomenal uptake of smartphones and tablets, that user  experience is now available any time we choose. In the same way that the Internet broke old business models and unleashed entirely new...

What Technologies are in Development?

January 06, 2013
Are standards just a reflection of innovation taking place or do they cause innovation by identifying problems and bringing together bright minds to solve them? CEA’s current portfolio of standards projects suggests the answer is both, and often at the same time. It is easy to think of standards as simply documenting the ideas developed by companies so that products work together, information can be shared and bigger markets are created. Writing down what others invented dominates, but there also are many problems solved from scratch in the process. Here is a quick look at some innovative work taking place in CEA standards.   CEA is completing work on a smart grid standard...
