Congress Holds Hearing on State Business Activity Taxes

Earlier this month, CEA's Michael Petricone testified before the House Small Business Committee. CEA is advocating legislation that would limit the power of states to tax businesses with no physical presence in the state.  The Business Activity Tax Simplification Act (BATSA) is pending in both the U.S. House and Senate.  If your company has been unfairly targeted for state business activity taxes and you would like to help in this campaign, please contact us immediately.

NYC Council Passes Ordinance Requiring Electronics Recycling

The New York City Council approved legislation (Intro 104-A) on February 13th that establishes the first municipal producer responsibility mandate for electronics recycling in the United States. The legislation requires producers to finance the collection and recycling of covered electronic products (computer central processing units; cathode ray tubes and CRT-devices; keyboards, electronic mice and other electronic pointing devices; televisions; printers; computer monitors or similar video display devices with a screen that is greater than four inches in diameter; laptop or portable computers; and portable music players) that are generated in the City. The Mayor’s Office had objected to a provision in the legislation that would require manufacturers to meet minimum collection rates. It is unclear whether those objections have been addressed or whether the Council will vote to override a possible veto of the measure.
