CEA Congratulates President-Elect Obama on His Electoral Victory
CEA congratulates Barack Obama on his election as the 44th President of the United States. In a statement issued after the election, CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro congratulated the President-Elect, stating that, "At a time of unprecedented challenges to our nation, CEA appreciates the President-elect's embracing of technology in creating opportunity, growing our economy and creating jobs."

CEA Launches Ad Campaign Urging Passage of Free Trade Agreements
Last month, CEA published a series of ads in congressional-focused newspapers citing the benefits of opening new markets to U.S. manufacturers and highlighting strong American exports. The ads, scheduled to run in Roll Call as well as The Hill, urge the passage of the Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement during the lame duck session held in November.

Act Now to Preserve a Fair and Innovative Workplace
In today's struggling economy, government must embrace policies that help advance business development and creates jobs. The Employee Free Choice Act ("EFCA"); also known as "card check" legislation, harms American businesses by allowing unions to do away with secret ballots, weakening our basic democratic freedoms in the workplace. CEA opposes the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act and recommends Congress and the President preserve private balloting for all employees in union elections.

The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW) is a coalition of workers, employers, associations and organizations that is working to stop the EFCA from becoming law. For more information and to get involved in the coalition’s efforts, visit: www.myprivateballot.com

MPAA Selectable Output Control Petition Could Disable 20 Million DTVs
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has asked the FCC to waive the Selectable Output Control ban enacted in 2003. If Hollywood’s request is granted, the studios can unilaterally shut off television connections which they deem "insecure", preventing viewers from accessing content. Specifically, if they succeed, Americans who own more than 20 million HDTVs with analog-only inputs would be prevented from accessing new high definition programming.

To join us in opposing this proposal, please contact Jamie Hedlund.

Public Voting Begins for CEA’s DTV Contest on YouTube
Starting today through December 7, visit www.youtube.com/dtvtransition to vote for your favorite video in CEA’s DTV Contest. One grand prize winner will receive a home entertainment center including a flat screen high-definition TV, an HD Blu-ray disc player and a surround sound audio system. The winning entry will be announced on December 10, 2008.

USTR Looks to CEA as Industry Lead On Rules of Origin Revisions
The office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) requested that CEA and its members assist in simplifying the rules of origin classifications for consumer electronic products in Asian Pacific markets. Through this effort, CEA hopes to make trade more efficient and lessen the burden of classification on businesses.

Any member company with questions or an interest in rules of origin simplification should contact Sage Chandler.

FCC Issues White Spaces Order
On November 14, the FCC released its "White Spaces" order adopting rules that will permit unlicensed fixed and personal/portable devices to operate in vacant television broadcast spectrum. The FCC envisions the development of new and innovative wireless broadband devices and services. The order also contains a host of regulatory protections intended to provide adequate interference protection to incumbent operators in the television bands (e.g., digital broadcasters and wireless microphones). CEA will distribute a more thorough summary and analysis of the 130-page order in the near future.
