Conducted for CEA by independent research firm Technology Forecasters Inc. (TFI), the study assesses industry progress in adopting sustainable policies, practices and programs and highlights specific environmental accomplishments by leaders in the consumer electronics industry. Highlights of the study include: • Decreased electricity use: Among companies that reported reduced electricity consumption, electricity usage declined by as much as 25 percent during the past three to four years. • Relative greenhouse gas reduction: Among the major CE companies that reported greenhouse gas emissions from 2004-2007, seven of the 10 have achieved a reduction per one million dollars revenue. • Strong recycling commitment: Among 64 electronics companies surveyed, more than two-thirds — 69 percent — report that they are actively recycling electronic products and components, and 38 percent report reuse of the electronics products they make or use. Together, these actions have helped to recycle nearly 800,000 tons of electronic waste. • Improved energy efficiency: Continuous improvement across the industry in nearly every product. The widespread shift from CRT to LCD monitors that occurred earlier this decade reduced average energy use per monitor by about 30 percent. Questions? Contact Parker Brugge or Joanne Sonenshine

The act supports free and open trade and investment between the US and several countries in South America including Colombia and Peru. The act allows the president to suspend trade preferences with countries that do not uphold certain agreements. In a statement given immediately before the signing, President Bush reminded the public, “[N]ow that members of Congress have ensured duty-free access for American -- South American products entering our markets, they also need to ensure duty-free access for U.S. products entering South American markets. Congress has a good opportunity to take a step in that direction by approving our free trade agreement with Colombia.” CEA applauds passage of H.R. 7222, the Andean Trade Preference Act Extension and continues to work towards passage of pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Peru and South Korea. The act mandates improvements to broadband data collection by the federal government. CEA applauds the passage and signing of this key legislation as advancing the deployment of broadband by better identifying underserved areas in our nation and providing a roadmap for the development of initiatives to address deployment gaps. On the passage of the Act, Veronica O’Connell, CEA’s vice president, Congressional Affairs said: “Passage of the broadband mapping legislation brings us one step closer to ensuring that all Americans have access to high-speed Internet.
