President Signs Product Safety Reform Legislation, CEA to Co-Sponsor Industry Seminar on October 8th
On August 14th, President Bush signed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, a measure designed to increase funding to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and strengthen product safety standards.  As part of efforts to educate members on the new law, CEA is co-sponsoring an industry seminar with the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and the Air Conditioning Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

The program will be held on Wednesday, October 8th at the Hyatt Regency, Bethesda, MD. CPSC Chair, Nancy Nord will be the featured lunch speaker.  The registration fee is $450, which covers printed materials, speakers, hotel costs, lunch, coffee breaks, etc. Note that if you register more than one person from your company, there is a discount of $100.00. Leading Organizations Urge Caution on Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)
Nearly two dozen organizations, including CEA and the Home Recording Rights Coalition (HRRC) have signed on to a letter to the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the Department of Commerce regarding the negotiation of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).  The agreement aims to enhance “international leadership in the fight against counterfeiting and piracy.”

The join industry letter, sent in advance of a September 22nd public meeting organized by USTR and the Department of Commerce, requests that any language in the agreement pertaining to “Internet Distribution” be consistent with current U.S. law.  CEA and the HRRC believe that the ACTA should only deal with clearly established copyright laws that do not go beyond language in current Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

New CEA Survey Shows Strong Growth in Consumer Awareness of the DTV Transition
With  five months to go until the transition to digital television broadcasting in the United States, the country is on track and ready for the transition according to research released by CEA this month. Consumer awareness of the transition to digital television (DTV) has grown 12 percentage points to 86 percent since the first of the year, according to new market research.

CEA also released new survey results that predict the continued success of the National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA)’s converter box coupon program. Almost one-third (32 percent) of households using an antenna on at least one television have already applied for their converter box coupon. Another 37 percent of antenna households plan to request their coupon within the year, while 21 percent don’t plan to request a coupon at all. This data suggests that antenna households will request an additional 14 million converter box coupons in the coming months, well within the available number of coupons remaining in NTIA’s program.“This survey is very exciting because it validates what our industries have believed for years: the digital television transition will be a huge success,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA in a statement on the transition.

New Poll Finds Majority of Americans Support Trade
In a new poll released by CEA this month, there is considerable support among Americans for overseas trade. Fifty-eight percent of those polled said they consider trade a good thing because it has reduced the costs of goods such as electronics and clothing while at the same time helping Americans to become more competitive with workers overseas.  A vast majority, 69 percent, report that they personally benefit from trade and Fifty-seven percent said that America would not be the economic leader it is today without overseas trade. The survey released by the CEA was conducted by Zogby International.

“The verdict is in and the people have spoken. Now it’s time for Congress to grasp what the American people firmly understand – that trade benefits our country,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “It’s time for Congress to listen to the American people and not the protectionists in the media and do what’s right for our economy, which is passage of trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.”

CEA Applauds Increased Number of Voluntary Electronics Recycling Programs
Earlier this month, CEA member Samsung launched a new take-back and recycling program for its consumer electronics products. In a press release, Parker Brugge, CEA’s Vice President of Environmental Affairs and Industry Sustainability, stated that the program is "a welcome addition to the current slate of electronics recycling options for consumers.” CEA research demonstrates that consumers are placing more importance on electronics recycling than ever before. In fact, 87 percent of US adults think that recycling unused electronics is important. That sentiment is quickly translating into action, as the number of CE products being recycled increases—up 27 percent in 2007 over 2005.

CEA’s website www.MyGreenElectronics.org offers more tips for consumers on how to responsibly use, reuse and recycle consumer electronics products. The site includes a zip-code searchable database of electronics recyclers nationwide, in addition to information on electronics recycling programs from consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers.

CEA's Political Action Committee (CEAPAC) protects your freedom to build and sell consumer electronics products. Right now, outside interests are pushing Congress to impose design mandates that will raise costs and reduce our freedom to innovate. Other groups are urging severe restrictions on international trade that will harm our competitiveness and our bottom lines.

What are the benefits of a vital CEAPAC?
•    CEAPAC ensures that CEA remains the strongest voice on issues critical to our industry
•    CEAPAC promotes our message of innovation and free markets
•    CEAPAC enables our industry to support policymakers who share our values

How is CEAPAC funded?
CEAPAC is funded solely through voluntary, personal contributions from the executive and administrative personnel of CEA's corporate members. Corporate contributions are prohibited under federal law. For more information, please fill out and fax the PAC authorization form or contact CEAPAC at 703-907-5223.
