CEA Supports Sens. Rubio and Booker on Bipartisan Spectrum Bill
Arlington, VA – 06/20/2014 – The following statement can be attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®
, regarding today’s introduction of the bipartisan Wi-Fi Innovation Act by Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.):
“We applaud Senators Rubio and Booker for taking a bipartisan approach toward identifying new spectrum for unlicensed uses.
“Unlicensed spectrum is the fuel that powers innovation. According to research by CEA announced last week, unlicensed spectrum generates $62 billion a year
for the U.S. economy while creating jobs across our nation. The consumer electronics that rely most heavily on unlicensed spectrum – devices which include Bluetooth and radio frequency identification-enabled devices – have a cumulative annual growth rate of roughly 30 percent.
“Consumer demand for spectrum-enabled products that provide the ‘anytime/anywhere’ connectivity we want is now driving the need for even more unlicensed spectrum. Through the study initiated by this legislation, the FCC will be empowered to put our country’s spectrum to its most efficient use.
“We live in an increasingly interconnected and untethered world, and are using more and more smart, connected devices. We must have enough unlicensed spectrum for them – and us – to communicate with one other.”
CEA recently released the report, Unlicensed Spectrum and the American Economy
, which gauges the economic impact of devices that use unlicensed spectrum.
